Whole FoodsI’ve long advocated using business for the greater good of society and the world at large and deeply admire companies that have been doing the very same successfully. John Moore over at Fast Company recently wrote a very telling post about this very topic as it relates to Whole Foods (Go Ahead…Change the World). The entire post is a good read, but move on down to the end for the real meat. Moore writes:

Why even bother launching a new business, bringing a new line extension to market, or creating a new service if you aren’t going to change the world with it? There is too much competition out there not to do something so incredibly remarkable it will change the world. Seriously … the only worthwhile reason to start a new business or launch a new product and that is to change the world.

So, how are you going to change the world with your next business?

I agree wholeheartedly! What a thing to strive for and to model one’s business after—imagine if all businesses had such motives…

ChangeThis.com

ChangeThis.comI just stumbled upon one of the more interesting websites I have found in quite some time called ChangeThis. I liked it so much, in fact, that I’ve placed a permanent link to it in the “links” section in the right column of this site!

ChangeThis is creating a new kind of media. A form of media that uses existing tools (like PDFs, blogs and the web) to challenge the way ideas are created and spread.

…and challenge me they have! I’ve downloaded 15 of the manifestos so far and plan to scour the rest of their archives before I begin to read them all.

HP Continues to Trim Productlines

What’s going on at HP? A few days ago they announced the cessation of the HP iPod, and now they have decided to stop selling digital cameras in Asia. HP’s new CEO, Mark Hurd, certainly seems to be on a fat-trimming expedition.

In the case of the HP iPod, apparently Fiorina left little room for profit during negotiations with Jobs, so Hurd’s cut there seems quite intelligent. Time will tell if the digital camera cuts as well as the 14,500 pink slips he recently authorized help propel HP back to the top of the Tech universe once again.

Apple “Re-Invents” the Mouse

Mac news sites are awash with reports of Apple’s new Mighty Mouse, the much awaited answer for the Mac dedicated who have long wondered if Apple will produce a multi-button mouse.

And leave it to Apple to not just create a multi-button mouse, but one with innovation that will make competing models jealous. The two features that look most likely to create envy in mice circles are the ridiculously simple scroll wheel (that’s not a wheel) and the manner in which Apple retained the one button shell but managed to add four button technology.

The question I’d like to see answered is whether or not this was a waste of time and R&D money on Apple’s part. Even as one of the staunch Apple faithful, I’ve pretty much always ditched the Apple-issued mouse that comes with each new Mac I purchased and have replaced it with a more ergonomic and functional one from Kensington. The one button design, though quite sexy, was fairly uncomfortable for me to use when it was originally designed, and quite frankly, I tired of control+clicking. The $25-35 investment in a new mouse was always worth it, if only for a more comfortable grip and that ever-important second button. So why maintain the same ergonomic design when I am sure Apple has received countless complaints about hand and click discomfort? And why the “Mighty Mouse” name? I find it catchy, but I can’t seem to get a certain cartoon jingle out of my head…

I’ll pop into an Apple Store as soon as I have a moment to do so and will gladly take the Mighty Mouse for a spin. Until then, I’ll happily admire Apple for making leaps forward in scroll and button sensitivity functionality, but shake my head quietly at their clutch on the ever uncomfortable clam shell.
