Day 8: Shanghai [China no. 8]

[Note: Read a more chronological account of Day 8 on calpolymbatrip.com]

Day 8 proved to be another slow photography day for me, at least until we arrived at our final company visit for the day. We started with a great presentation by Bryan Stiles, the Deputy CEO of HSBC’s Shanghai office. Following his presentation, Mr. Stiles treated us to lunch and entertained the many questions those of us seated at his table peppered him with. Following lunch, we took a bit of a drive outside of Shanghai for a visit at RR Donnelley, a US-based printing company. The visit was interesting, and eye opening. All of the photographs below are from the visit and include captions.

    James,

It’s great to hear from you! I’ve actually been thinking about you a lot over the past week or so and am bummed that I barely had any chance to hang out with you on the trip. I felt like that happened with a lot of people, though it is hard to imagine not having many opportunities over such a significant chunk of travel.

What’s new with you? Are you back up in the Bay Area? Any chance you are still tossing around the possibility of traveling for a bit? I think I remember trying to pressure you into skipping out on a year of working to traipse around the world…

I’m almost finished “printing” my photos and will probably have them all posted here within a few days. I’ve also really enjoyed looking at all of the images people put on the FTP server and will upload all of mine there shortly.

I’m in Santa Barbara for another week and then I head out to Boston for a bit. We are pretty close to completing the sale of our photo business, and after that, I am not sure what our plans are. Living abroad for a year (or 10) seems quite appealing to me right now (I suppose a 2-week vacation in the Caribbean sounds good as well, but I digress…) and our China trip further solidified my desire to stick to jobs/businesses that more closely reflect my personal beliefs and morals. Yet there are still some questions floating in my mind about how realistic it may be to find a vocation that doesn’t have some conflict. For instance, I was quite impressed with Jason’s PLA presentation, but then I later found out that Cargill is a heavy contributor to Amazon deforestation (interestingly enough for soybean crop). I think most businesses are stuck with that kind of discrepancy and I have a bit of a problem adopting a “lesser of two evils” attitude. It’s a lot to think about.

Keep in touch — if you do end up traveling, you are always welcome to take a break and stay for a while wherever I may be.
